San Juan Island: A Weekend Exploration Getaway for 2

After a gueling workweek for both of us, Andrew and I decided to continue our northwest exploration by sneaking away to the San Juan Island for the weekend. While the weather is still in the 50's, cold, rainy, and doesn't resemble anything of June - we're still relaxing and decompressing from our work week mayhem.

It was quite the journey to get here: Hurry up and drive 2 hours north from Bellevue to Anacortes, then wait. wait. wait. in the ferry line for a couple of hours. I ended up hunkering down in the women's bathroom at the ferry terminal trying to make sure my phones didn't die and get my computer recharged after frantically working and answering emails on our drive to the terminal. Once on the ferry ... we were home-free, but still an hour left to travel. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a super quaint island experience. Here's a recap of our wonderful island getaway:

On the ferry...

Arriving to port:

Our bed and breakfast property - all the pretty horses:

Lots of farmland on the island:

The first night - dinner at the Downrigger.

An ominous sky overlooking the water - really stunning views!

I just love this picture that I took with the water and land and hills in the background -- breathtaking!

 Land meets water.

This fox came out of nowhere and quickly honed in on the sweet little basset hound...

The fox and the hound had quite a little stare down session. Then, the dog took the first step and scared away the fox!

These driftwood piles were quite something to be seen:

Lots of seaweed piled up on the shoreline:

Really breathtaking views though along the desolate beachfront - I love how uninhabited and underdeveloped it is!

Here we are on the beach.

Check out these baby otter's eating their fish that their momma otter caught for them:

This was an amazing sight to see...

Then, Andrew got just a little too close and the momma otter had to come back to her babies and keep them away from us! Then, they swam off into the water just as quick as could be!

Ships were 'a sailin'...

After our "otter watching" we headed up to the park to do some whale watching and caught a glimpse of the top of the fins of the whales:

Then, we headed up to Roche Harbor.
The landscape on the San Juan island is quite drastic. Here is one photo on the right side of the road:

Here is a photo taken on the left side of the road - what a difference!

A wonderful getaway with my favorite person....
